Using Puerta Calakmul as a base, it is easy to include visits to other nearby Mayan sites such as Becan, Chicanna and Rio Bec.

The hotel itself is one of the most eco conscious in the Yucatan, with individual, wooden cabins spread out beneath the forest canopy. Each of the 15 cabins has a thatched Palapa roof and spacious interior together with a small outdoor terrace on which to sit out and listen to the sounds of the jungle.

In terms of facilities, the hotel has a small pool, bar, restaurant, TV room and wifi in the reception area.

Local guides are also available to explore the beautiful surroundings of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve which is home to jaguars, howler and spider monkeys, foxes, deer and a wide variety of birdlife.

In keeping with their green credentials, the 15 cabins don’t have TV’s or a/c, but are surprisingly cool (temperature, not hip!) and comfortable.
