Cycling Big Corn Island
A guide to cycling Big Corn Island in Nicaragua, a fun and easy way to explore this…
Nicaragua /Jul 23, 2024
Unless you have plenty of time on your hands and don’t mind a grueling journey by sea, the only way to reach the Corn Islands of Nicaragua is by air.

There are currently no international flights to the Corn Islands so, for now at least, the only viable option is to fly from and to Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, or, very occasionally, from Bluefields on the country’s Caribbean coast.
As with the rest of the country, which has a very limited domestic flight network, the only airline flying to the Corn Islands is La Costena. Based out of Managua, La Costena operates a fleet of 12-seater Cessna Grand Caravans as well as the occasional, larger ATR.
During the high season, flights go back and forth between Managua & the Corn Islands, generally in the early morning and late afternoon, although, with such small aircraft, it definitely pays to book as far in advance as possible.
Flight time depends on the direction and strength of the wind but is typically 75 to 90 minutes in each direction.

While we talk about flights to the Corn Islands, please note that the only airport (pictured below), is located on Big Corn. There is no airport on Little Corn which can only be reached by boat.
Clients staying at Yemaya Reefs hotel on Little Corn Island will be met at the airport and transferred to the nearby dock. From there, a private boat will whisk them off to their hotel in approximately 30 minutes.
For those clients staying at Arenas Beach Hotel on Big Corn Island, the hotel’s shuttle bus meets all incoming flights for the 5 minute drive to the hotel.

Important Note Regarding Luggage: Due to the size of the aircraft operated on flights to the Corn Islands, passengers are restricted to one piece of checked-in luggage weighing no more than 15kgs, together with one, small piece of hand-luggage.
As many visitors to Nicaragua will be travelling with rather more than 15kgs of checked luggage, this could be something of a problem.
Fortunately, when booking a holiday to Nicaragua with Beyond The Ordinary, we offer a simple work around.
Clients simply need to pack a secondary bag, one that can take the aforementioned 15kgs of luggage. The remainder of clients’ luggage can then be left, in the main bag, with our local agents in Managua. This will then be returned to clients as soon as they return to Managua from the Corn Islands.
