Discover one of Ometepe Island’s most magical natural experiences with a guided Istian River kayak tour.
Designed for travellers who want to explore beyond the ordinary, ahem, this tranquil journey offers an unforgettable blend of soft adventure, wildlife viewing and picturesque scenery, all from the comfort of a modern kayak.

Our Istian River (Rio Istian) kayaking tour takes you deep into a protected nature reserve nestled between Ometepe’s iconic volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas. From the moment you launch, you’ll find yourself surrounded by lush rainforest, calm waters, and the soothing sounds of nature.
As you paddle through the winding river, you’ll pass through shaded canals lined with towering trees and flowering plants before reaching open sections near Lake Nicaragua. Here, the landscape opens dramatically, revealing panoramic views of the volcanoes rising above the island.
What truly sets this experience apart is the abundance of wildlife. Accompanied by experienced local guides, you’ll should be able to spot howler and capuchin monkeys in the treetops, iguanas along the riverbanks, and caimans resting quietly in the water.
Birdlife is also especially rich in this area, with frequent sightings of herons, kingfishers, parrots and osprey. Your guide will be able to share their in-depth knowledge of the ecosystem, helping you understand and appreciate the delicate balance of life in the wetlands.

Clients will be collected from their hotel and driven to a small village not far from the mouth of the Istian River. From here, you will take a motorized launch to the mouth of the river.
Our tours typically last two to three hours and include all necessary equipment, safety briefings, and expert guidance. We schedule departures in the early morning or late afternoon, when wildlife activity is highest and temperatures are most comfortable. Small group sizes ensure a personalized experience and minimal impact on the environment.
The best time to visit the Istian River is at the end of the wet season, ie November & December. The summer rains result in the level of Lake Nicaragua rising and, in tandem, the Istian River filling to its maximum capacity. The same is true during the wet season of course, although there is more chance of being rained on during your visit!
As the dry season proceeds, water levels fall, limiting how much of the River Istian is navigable. At the very end of the dry season, ie April & May, it may even be necessary for clients to carry their kayaks from the lake to the mouth of the river.

The river’s gentle current makes this tour perfect for beginners, couples, families, and anyone seeking a relaxing outdoor adventure.
Participants will be provided with life-jackets but must be able to swim. For families with youngish children, double kayaks can be provided.
Please note, towards the end of the dry season, it may be necessary to carry your kayak for a short distance so please take this into account when making your plans.
We are able to book a kayak tour on the Istian River as part of an overall holiday to Nicaragua (minimum 6 nights), including all accommodation.
All our holidays are entirely tailor made to clients’ personal requirements so there are almost limitless potential combinations and permutations. For just some initial ideas as to what is possible, please visit our Nicaragua itineraries page.
As part of any holiday that includes time on Ometepe Island, and in addition to the Istian River kayak tour, we can also arrange the following:
