Located with the Isletas de Granada, San Pablo Fort was built in 1789, one of a series of forts designed to protect Granada from attack by pirates.
These pirates, many of them British, sailed up the Rio San Juan (which links the Caribbean to the southern tip of Lake Nicaragua), before proceeding northwards to attack Granada.
San Pablo Fort is the only remaining, intact fort from this period and is a popular stopping off point on boat trips around the lake. It was restored in 1974 to mark the 450th anniversary of the founding of Granada by Spanish colonists.
As forts go, it is rather smaller than one might expect so doesn’t take long to explore. If you’re feeling thirsty, there are usually vendors on hand selling a variety of drinks and snacks.
A visit to San Pablo Fort is included on the boat trips we arrange to the Isletas from the nearby town Granada. You can find examples of these within the Itineraries section of our website.
