Holidays to Mexico City

While the focus of our Mexico programme remains the Yucatan Peninsula, combining the region with Mexico City is very straightforward.

So why visit Mexico City in the first place?

If Mexico has not been on your travel radar, your preconception of its capital city might be that it is very large, polluted and potentially dangerous with a reputation for upset stomachs (or Montezuma’s revenge as it used to be known). Apart from its size, the truth is very different.

While Mexico City is indeed amongst the largest cities in the world, the practical reality for visitors is that most of its key attractions and accommodation, as well a bewildering number of bars, restaurants and shops are located within easy reach of each other.

The city’s main, international airport is also incredibly central, just 30 minutes’ drive from the historic centre, aka the Centro Historico.

The Centro Historico is the heart of Mexico City and the oldest part of the city, built on top of the original Aztec city.

Sometimes referred to as simply Downtown or Centro, the Centro Historico is home to the vast Zocalo, the Catedral Metropolitana, Templo Mayor and much, much more. One could easily spend 3 or 4 days exploring just the Centro Historico on foot and not run out of things to see and do.

If, somehow, you do see everything there is to see in the Centro Historico, the city still has so much more to offer, of which the following are just a few examples.

A healthy walk or short taxi ride west of the Centro Historico takes one to beautiful, leafy Bosque de Chapultepec, the city’s green lungs. On the northern side of this park is one of the great museums of the world, the outstanding, not-to-be-missed Museum of Anthropology.

South from there, and easily reached by one of the city’s countless, great value taxis is the Coyoacan neighborhood, home to two much smaller but equally worthy museums, namely the old homes of Leon Trotsky and Frida Kahlo.

The only key visitor attractions in Mexico City that are outside of the city, and which require a bit more pre-planning (we can arrange both private and group tours) are the great Aztec pyramids at Teotihuacan and the famous Xochimilco Canals.

When done with visiting the countless visitor attractions that Mexico City has to offer, you will also find a city that is now one of the world’s great food, drink and shopping destinations, especially in the hipster neighbourhoods of Condesa & Roma.
