Selva Negra
Matagalpa & Jinotega, Nicaragua
Rustic Hideaway
Located midway between the towns of Matagalpa & Jinotega, Selva Negra is part coffee plantation, part nature reserve.
Originally settled by German immigrants who brought the coffee trade to Nicaragua, Selva Negra is still run by descendants of the same family.
Located at an altitude of between 1300 & 1500 metres, the cloud forest of Selva Negra is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. One of the most popular activities for visitors staying at the hotel is to set out on a guided, night time walk of the reserve, torch-in-hand, listening out for the sounds of the night!
In total, there are over 20kms of well maintained trails across the reserve, ideal for easy hikes, horse riding and bird spotting trips with local guides.
As a fully functioning coffee estate, Selva Negra also offers its very own coffee tours and, of course, serves up its own organic coffee.
The rustic, traditional accommodation comprises a choice between hotel-style rooms in the main building or a number of bungalows of varying sizes that are dotted around the grounds.
Also located within the main building, overlooking a picturesque lake, is the substantial restaurant and bar, popular with local day-trippers from Matagalpa & Jinotega in addition to hotel guests. If you happen to visit in October, don’t be surprised if your stay coincides with traditional Oktoberfest celebrations!
