Fuentes Georginas Hot Springs

The Fuentes Georginas hot springs are located approximately an hour’s drive from Quetzaltenango, Guatemala’s second largest city, and make for a relaxing outing amidst a beautiful, natural setting.

Fuentes Georginas hot springs Guatemala

Perched on the slopes of Zunil Volcano, and surrounded by dense cloud forest, the Fuentes Georginas hot springs owe their existence to the geothermal activity beneath the volcano. The spring’s warm waters, rich in sulphur and natural minerals, rise up through the rock before settling in natural pools of varying temperatures.

Visitors to Fuentes Georginas can therefore choose between a tepid pool in which to relax and while away a couple of hours or a rather hotter pool in which to salve tired muscles – ideal at the end of a hiking holiday in Guatemala.

In addition to the hot springs, the surrounding area provides a habitat for numerous bird species, butterflies, orchids, ferns and other native plants that thrive in the cool, humid climate of the cloud forest. Short walking trails allow visitors to explore the forest while enjoying fresh mountain air and panoramic views across the valleys below.

Due to its relatively remote location, someway off the standard tourist routes, Fuentes Georginas receives relatively few international visitors but is popular with Guatemalans from the city and surrounding towns and villages, especially at the weekend. If possible, visit during the week and in the morning.

Refreshingly relaxed and uncommercial, changing rooms and toilets are available on site together with a simple restaurant serving local, Guatemalan cuisine.

As a specialist in tailor made Guatemala itineraries, we are able to include a visit to Fuentes Georginas from Quetzaltenango as part of a private, multi centre tour.
