El Cuyo
Why visit El Cuyo?
Located on the Yucatan Peninsula’s north coast, El Cuyo is considered by many as perhaps the next big thing in beach tourism to Mexico.
With the Riviera Maya and east coast in general rapidly approaching saturation point, certainly in terms of beach front development, and Holbox no longer quite so off-the-beaten-track, El Cuyo, with its unspoiled, beaches and undeveloped tourist infrastructure, can only remain something of a secret for so long.
Connected to the mainland by a short causeway over the mangrove, often home to large flocks of flamingos, the only road into El Cuyo leads to a main street and central square that, outside of the weekend, retains the feel of a sleepy backwater.

Even at the weekend, when locals from inland towns and villages come to El Cuyo to relax on the beach with friends and family, the vibe remains very laid back.
The few hotels and restaurants that currently exist are all located east of the main square, set one block back from the beach on a sandy road.
For now, there are almost no hotels on the beach, no noisy beach bars, no beach clubs, no touts, just a beach that seems to stretch endlessly into the distance.
While it may not be awash with bars and restaurants, those restaurants that do exist in El Cuyo tend to be good quality, focused on local, healthy cuisine (including excellent ceviche) and generally much better value than similar restaurants on the east coast, especially those in Tulum.
One thing that El Cuyo is noted for is its breeze. The north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula is definitely windier than either the east or west coast and this has led to a mini-boom in tourists visiting the area to try their hand at kitesurfing (aka kiteboarding).
Whether you are an expert, or looking to try something entirely new, there are numerous schools that provide both equipment and tuition.
Away from the beach, just a short drive inland, the UMA Nature Reserve is based around extensive mangrove with options for guided kayaking trips, including the popular sunset option.
