When we say identical, we really mean it – apart from a different paint scheme all three hotels are exactly the same. I guess they saved on architect fees.

The point about the Villas Arqueologicas is that they offer the cheapest accommodation within walking distance of Chichen Itza and, as the vast majority of guests only stay for one night, the need for life’s luxuries isn’t quite as strong as it might otherwise be. Generally speaking, the hotel is very popular with tour groups.

That is not to suggest that there is anything wrong with the hotel and, indeed, the central pool is something of a bonus after a hot day’s exploration of the ruins. In addition to the pool, there is a pleasant bar and restaurant.

The hotel’s 42 rooms are the smallest that we have across in the Yucatan (bar their sister hotels) and are essentially just somewhere to wash and sleep.
