Located some 20kms north of Baracoa, within the Cuchillas del Toa biosphere, the Villa Maguana is one of those rare things in Cuba, a small, uncommercial beach hotel.
Smack in front of the hotel is a beautiful sheltered cove while, disappearing into the distance to the left of the property is a deserted, tree-lined, 2kms long beach. If you like to snorkel, there is a reef less than 200 metres off-shore from the hotel.
The hotel has just 16 rooms, housed in 4 rustic wooden cabins, all spacious and comfortable with lovely individual terraces.
Staying at Villa Maguana clearly isn’t about taking advantage of plentiful facilities and with just a simple bar / restaurant and no sports facilities, guests are expected to entertain themselves or, heaven forbid, chat to their fellow guests.
Please note that there are no villages or other settlements near Villa Maguana, and any taxis will have to come from Baracoa. If you wish to do some exploring while at the hotel it is therefore worth considering having a hire car.
However, for anyone looking to get away from it all and do nothing but flop out, there is probably no more beautiful, peaceful option anywhere in Cuba.
