Now, if your sole criteria for choosing where to stay at the beach is the quality of the hotel then, it has to be said, there are many better hotels in Cuba.

However, if you want to stay somewhere that combines the beach with ‘the real Cuba’ (history, culture, local sightseeing etc) then Trinidad is your only option and, for now at least, the Memories Trinidad Del Mar is the best of the existing three hotels at the beach.

Located some 20 minutes’ drive from the centre of Trinidad, and located on beautiful Playa Ancon, Memories Trinidad Del Mar was designed with a large nod to the town’s colonial legacy and is not unattractive although it is in need of updating.

Thankfully, the hotel is now under international management and is being slowly upgraded, both in terms of its infrastructure, rooms & facilities, as well as the provision of dining and general service.

Built around a freeform swimming pool and with plenty of sporting activities on offer, the hotel also features a choice of bars and restaurants although guests will probably want to head into town to mix things up.

Included in the price are all meals and snacks, all local and selected international drinks, non-motorised watersports, various land-based activities and evening entertainment.

The hotels’ 241 rooms are spacious and gradually being renovated and updated while there is also the option to upgrade to a seaview room.
