Historic site that is part hotel, part museum

The original Santo Domingo Convent was one of the largest in the Americas when, in 1773, it was raised to the ground by a massive earthquake. Like many other sites in Antigua, the Convent lay in ruins for the next 200 years until an ambitious project was launched in 1989 to restore as much as possible of the site to its former glory.

Located in one of Antigua’s most stylish neighbourhoods, some 15 to 20 minutes walk to the centre of town, the Casa Santo Domingo occupies one of the largest footprints in Antigua and, as well as the multi-dimensional museum, is home to an atmospheric hotel with spacious gardens, swimming pool, spa, bar and restaurant.

In total, there are some 130 hotel rooms, split between a wide variety of categories, but all furnished in a somewhat appropriate, sombre style.
