Beautiful, rustic hideaway overlooking Lake Petexbatun

Although described as an island, it was the Mayans who settled on the original Punta de Chimino who cut through the peninsula to create an artificial island and thereby protect themselves from attack by land.

Although most traces of this Mayan settlement lie buried beneath dense jungle, the nearby Mayan ruins of Aguateca are just a short, scenic boat ride away and have been more partly excavated.

In addition to acting as a base from which to explore the Mayan ruins of both nearby Aguateca and more distant Ceibal, the Chiminos Island Lodge will also appeal to nature lovers as the island itself is home to a variety of wildlife including ocelot, howler monkey, deer and ant eaters. Lake Petexbatun too is home to a rich diversity of birdlife.

The lodge itself is made using almost entirely natural materials and blends in seamlessly with its jungle surroundings. Facilities are non-existent but that’s not really why one would visit.

All bookings are accommodated on a Full Board basis with set menus and as much food as possible sourced locally and cooked freshly that day.

Accommodation consists of a number of huge, wooden cabanas, all directly over-looking the lake. Please note however that the island is powered by generator which is normally turned off at around 9pm.
