The Yucatan's only working hacienda

Billed as a living museum, Hacienda Sotuta de Peon is the only remaining hacienda in the Yucatan that still grows and processes (into rope) henequen, exactly as it would have been done during the region’s golden age.

Guided tours of the hacienda – both the original family home and the working parts of the estate – currently operate 3 times per day and last around 3 hours.

In addition to these tours, the hacienda has its own cenote and offers both horse riding and ATV adventures.

While the majority of those visiting the hacienda are doing so on a day trip, either from Merida to the north or other, nearby hotels (often in conjunction with a visit to Uxmal), the property also offers accommodation for those wanting to hang around and take in more of the region’s many attractions, including a number of other haciendas.

Accommodation at Hacienda Sotuta de Peon comprises a total of 28 thatched bungalows, all with private terraces and a hammock for lounging in.

Of these 28 bungalows, 14 are defined as Superior and 14 as Deluxe, the only difference being that Deluxe rooms have their own, small plunge pool. Both types of room category offer a choice of King or Twin beds.

All rooms feature ensuite bathrooms, a/c, wifi, minibar, safe and coffee making facilities.

When it comes to dining, the Hacienda Sotuta de Peon offers two options. Kih Restaurant is located in front of the original hacienda, serves both international and traditional Yucatecan food and is open for both breakfast and lunch. Due to its dual function as a hotel and museum, the restaurant can get busy during lunch.

The second restaurant, Muum, is located within the hotel itself, next to the swimming pool, and is only open for dinner. Describing itself as a fusion restaurant, it also prides itself on sourcing many of its ingredients from within the estate.
